How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants act as artificial tooth roots. They are anchored in the jawbone and provide important stimulation to keep it healthy and strong. In fact, they are the only tooth replacement option that can halt and prevent the jawbone deterioration that accompanies tooth loss.

Once the implants fuse with the jawbone (a process called osseointegration), they can provide stable support for custom restorations like dental crowns, bridges, and dentures. These restorations are indistinguishable from natural teeth and can give you a new chance at a beautiful, fully functional smile.

With proper care, your restorations can last well over a decade, and the implants can last a lifetime.

Bone Grafts and Sinus Lifts Two Procedures to Improve Implant Candidacy

A bone graft or sinus lift may be the key to the success of your implant treatment. If you need preparatory care to restore lost jaw tissue, you're in good hands at our Logan and Garland offices. Take a look at how our oral surgeon performs these two important procedures:

Bone graft

Bone Grafts Strengthen the Lower Jaw

During bone graft surgery, Dr. Anderson will access the lower jawbone through the gums and graft natural or artificial bone material onto the area of the jaw affected by atrophy. The grafted material will integrate with the natural jaw tissue over the course of a few months to create a sound base for a titanium implant to anchor in.

Sinus lift

Sinus Lifts Restore the Upper Jaw

During sinus lift surgery, Dr. Anderson will address degeneration in the upper jawbone instead. He will create an access point in the affected area, then carefully lift the maxillary sinus (the sinus behind the cheeks) out of the way to make room for the grafting material. This protects the sinuses and strengthens the jaw at the same time.

The Dental Implant Process

Dr. Anderson uses the most advanced dental implant techniques at our high-tech offices in Logan and Garland, UT. Here's what patients can expect when they choose dental implants, step by step:

Dr. Gregory Anderson uses innovative surgical guides to maximize the accuracy of implant placement.
Dr. Gregory Anderson uses innovative surgical guides to maximize the accuracy of implant placement.

Consultation

Our doctor will assess your candidacy and discuss your goals. With our digital X-rays, we will capture precise 3D models of your oral structures and jawbone to plan for successful implantation.

Implant Placement

We will administer an anesthetic and any necessary sedation to numb the mouth and induce a state of relaxation before surgery. Using innovative surgical guides to maximize the accuracy of implant placement, Dr. Anderson will make small incisions in your gums. He will then insert the titanium implants into your jawbone. Finally, he will close the incisions.

Osseointegration

Over the next four to six months, the titanium posts will fuse with your jawbone. Dr. Anderson or your primary dentist can provide temporary restorations for you to wear while you recover from implant surgery.

Abutment Placement

Once you have successfully healed, you will return to our offices in Logan or Garland for a second procedure to place abutments. Abutments connect implants and restorations, securing your prosthetic with maximum stability. After Dr. Anderson places the abutments, you will need another few weeks for your gums to heal.

Crafting Prosthetics

After abutment placement, we will take impressions of your mouth for the design of your permanent restoration. We can coordinate with your primary dentist and send these impressions to a trusted dental lab where skilled technicians will craft your custom crown, bridge, or denture in the precise shade of your natural teeth.

Placing Restoration

Once your prosthetic is ready, you can schedule an appointment for placement with Dr. Anderson or your primary dentist. The crown, bridge, or denture will securely attach to the implant, restoring the function and appearance of your smile. With proper care, your prosthetic can last well over a decade, and the implants can last a lifetime.

Dental Implants Are Highly Successful
And Carry Low Risks

Because dental implants provide a direct connection between your jawbone and dental crowns, bridges, or dentures, they are widely considered dentistry's best option for restoring missing teeth. They are very effective, with success rates between 95 and 98 percent. The chance of complications is very low, especially if you don't have any preexisting dental conditions.

A Trusted Solution

"When performed by a trained and experienced dental implant dentist, dental implant surgery is one of the safest and most predictable procedures in dentistry."

Dental Implants in Action

Dental implants fit snugly within the jawbone. Once capped with abutments, they can support lifelike dental prosthetics.

Breaking Down the Cost of Dental Implants

Our practice prices treatment at $1,200 per implant with $400 down at the time of service. It's important to know that the total cost of dental implant treatment is dependent upon several factors and can vary significantly from one case to another. In general, our fees tend to be around 30 percent less than other practices in our area. When you visit our offices in Logan or Garland, Utah, we can give you a cost breakdown and personal estimate. Factors that can affect the overall cost of dental implant surgery include:

Number of Implants

The more implants you require, the more costly your treatment will be. The number and location of your missing teeth will determine how many implants you need.

Preparatory Procedures

Some patients need additional procedures in order to qualify for implants. Supplementary procedures such as tooth extractions or bone grafting will increase the overall cost of treatment.

Sedation Options

Some patients may only require local anesthetic for their dental implant procedure. However, those who have trouble remaining still during long procedures or experience dental anxiety may benefit from sedation dentistry to ensure their comfort.

Doctor's Experience

As a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Anderson possesses a higher level of skill and technical knowledge than general dentists. Choosing Dr. Anderson greatly improves your chances of successful implant treatment.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

/

A dental implant is a permanent solution, and it can remain in place for your entire life.

The restoration attached to your dental implant, though, may require periodic replacement. As an example, with good care, the dental crown attached to your abutment may last 10 years before you need a new one.

Using Teamwork To Craft a Smile You'll Love

Throughout your implant treatment, Dr. Anderson will communicate with your general dentist for combined expertise and a focus on long-term dental health and wellness.

As a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Gregory E. Anderson is highly qualified to place your implants. If you need a tooth or teeth extracted first, he can assist with that, too: he will carefully remove infected or damaged teeth, keeping you calm and comfortable with sedation options.

Following the removal of a compromised tooth or the placement of bone grafts to build jaw density, he can place a dental implant. This implant will open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Once the implant has healed, your dentist can place a restoration to complete your smile.

Dental Implant FAQs

Why should I have an oral surgeon place my implants instead of my general dentist?

While your regular dentist can likely place your dental implants, it's best to visit a specialist like Dr. Anderson to ensure you're receiving the most precise treatment available. As an oral surgeon, Dr. Anderson has additional years of training in the treatment of the intricate systems of the mouth, jaw, and supporting oral structures. This knowledge translates into a superior experience for patients undergoing complex care, like implant surgery. You have a lower risk of complications and a better chance of a smooth recovery when you work with a specialist.

Which types of sedation are available to dental implant patients?

Our Utah team offers nitrous oxide sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask and takes effect quickly. You'll be comfortable but remain aware, and you'll be able to drive yourself home afterward. IV sedation and general anesthesia are administered through an intravenous line and will leave you with little to no memory of the procedure. You'll need someone else to escort you home after surgery. Dr. Anderson is ready to talk about which option will be best for your comfort.

I think I'll need more than just dental implants to improve my oral health. Can Dr. Anderson help?

Yes! If you're dealing with multiple oral health issues at a time, you may be a great candidate for a custom treatment called full mouth reconstruction. This is a personalized restorative dental plan that combines procedures specifically chosen to address your smile's unique concerns, like tooth decay, gum disease, trauma, or bite issues. Dr. Anderson will develop a thorough treatment plan that helps you achieve a state of excellent oral health and function.

About 10 years ago Dr Anderson was recommended to me by my dentist, and I won’t go anywhere else if I have any choice at all. I have gone to him for emergency and non emergency visits and he has taken great care of me each and every time.  From the very first time I went to Greg, every time he walks into the room he treats me like close friends, and I’ve seen him treat all of his patients the same way. His secretaries and staff are fantastic. I wish all doctors were this good. I will recommend Dr Greg Anderson to anyone!
